With the snow and ice beginning to melt, are you dreaming of your garden?
Looking at seed catalogs.
Sketching your garden plans on paper.
Starting seeds inside.
Wanting to feel the dirt on your hands.
Smelling the earth as it thaws out.
As you plan your garden this year, don't forget to plan for your chickens also.
Harvesting from your own garden is healthy for both you and your flock of chickens. Many times, it is also less expensive to grow your own fruits and vegetables.
Depending on climate and location, there are many plants to consider that are beneficial to humans and chickens. Many can be grown in containers, if you don't have the space for a garden in your yard.
For my list of common plants and why they are good for you and your chickens, please click HERE to read my post at Community Chickens.

Hi Lori, Wonderful article. My girls love romaine and canteloupe. Thank you for sharing all the info. You gave me some great tips! :) I've always wanted to try growing Kale!
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine. Kale is one of my favorite vegetables...I buy it from the store in the off season. I bake kale chips a lot! ;-) A great alternative to potato chips.

I so wish we could have chickens, but we can't. I do love to garden, but I get very little sun in my garden, and so only able to grow climbers, like tomatoes, cucs, beans etc. But then I also need room for my roses!
ReplyDeleteTomatoes, cucumbers, and beans are some pretty fantastic things to grow! Container gardening offers so many possibilities Cathy. I am going to try my hand at some climbing roses this year.

ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda!
DeleteThanks Amanda!
DeleteThis is really helpful. I don't have chickens myself but my sister has chickens so I will definitely be passing this along to her. There's just something about growing your own vegetables that make them taste amazing.
ReplyDeleteYes, growing your own food offers amazing taste! And the scraps don't go in the trash, they go to the chickens ;-) It's a win - win!
DeleteMy chickens get special plants in my garden too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up with Green Thumb Thursday! I hope you'll link up again this week!

Chickens and gardens go hand in hand. Both can be so rewarding too!
