Why Chickens Molt in the Fall Time

Some of the trees are bare and so are the nesting boxes!

Even other chicken owners that usually sell eggs have covered up their 'fresh eggs for sale' signs.

On my post for Community Chickens, I discuss why fall is a common time for chickens to molt.  Click HERE to read it.

  1. Thanks for this information, I was looking at my hens today with so many feathers gone, and blaming my rooster. ~smile~ .

    1. Glad you found the information useful Sue. A heavy molt can definitely make them look scraggly ;-) I will be so thankful for fresh eggs again!

  2. I always wondered why. It always seems like they should do this in the spring. Great info to know.

    1. Spring is another time when molting is common, Vickie. Shedding old feathers in preparation for new ones when daylight is longer and the temperatures are warmer.
