A Week by Week Plan for Raising Baby Chicks

A mistake at the hatchery has delayed us getting our baby chicks, but when they get here, I want to have an outline of what to expect.

For my recent article for Community Chickens, I compiled a week by week plan to help keep us in the know with our own baby chicks.

If you are getting baby chicks or are curious as to what to expect, I hope you find this outline helpful also.

* My friend Susan shared some adorable baby chick photos that I used in the article. *

  1. Eventually, I plan on getting chickens too, but I need to wait until we get the yard set up the way I want it. I can't wait to see yours :)

    1. How exciting that you will be getting chickens Rue! I can relate...it took us a while to get to this point, so when you get there, it will be so worth it.

  3. I remember when we brought ours home last year, they were just the sweetest, fluffiest little things. Awwww...they just melt your heart with all their cuteness, and they do need extra special care! Great article, LL! I especially liked at the end about the laying song, too funny! Looking forward to seeing yours when they arrive! What breed or breeds are you getting? ~CB

    1. Thanks CB! We picked them up tonight - 2 white rocks, 2 silver laced, 2 aericanna (lay blue eggs) and 2 bronze turkeys.

  4. Now I know why my chicks are sitting on the edge of their box! They need to roost. I thought they wanted to see the world beyond their home. This is so easy. Now I don't have to protect my floors and cover the box with cage wire. Just build an "H" inside.

Thanks for the great article. I've been raising chickens for years and still learning.

    1. Chickens have a natural desire to roost at a very early age. This is an easy way for them to roost while in the brooder. We are constantly learning with our chickens too!
