The eating nook is all decked out and ready for Christmas!

We don't have a formal dining room in our home.  Actually when we were building, we changed what was suppose to be the formal dining room into an office.

Winter Dishes

I have been pining over these dishes for a quite a while now.  They are called Winter Frost by Pfaltzgraff. Enough said, right?  Retired.  Expensive.  Not in my budget.

I found some plates on e-bay that were affordable, so I bid on them.  That's all I have - 6 plates.  They are so pretty to me...such beautiful colors...a frosted woodland scene.  

Look at the details.

Frosted branches.  Gleaming leaves.  Pops of color through the winter berries.  Little pine cones.

I plan on using these dishes everyday throughout the winter.  *I am a bit giddy - I have never had seasonal dishes.*  Here is how I am enjoying setting the table with my new found treasure.

I don't want to put anything on top of the plates because I don't want to cover the beauty.  I also don't want a lot going on as far as the centerpiece...I want the plates to be the star!

My mom recently gave me this small blue mason jar.  I love the height of this to use as a centerpiece. It is the perfect height for the table...I don't need to move it when we eat.  I placed fresh cut cedar in the jar.  The branches and the cones mimic the scene on the plates.

To pretty it up a little, I tied some twine around the neck and placed the jar on a white snowflake candle holder.  The white is a nice contrast between the blue jar and the dark table.

Sometimes less is more....

Great Grandma's Dishes

Great Grandma's Dishes

For Christmas dinner, we use my Great Grandma's dishes.  She received these dishes as a gift for her 50th wedding anniversary.  The name of the dishes are Fire King.  The are made by Anchor Hocking in Ohio!  

Unfortunately, I do not have a memory of my Great Grandma, but my Dad speaks fondly of her often. He is the one that has gifted me these heirlooms.

I purchased the gold chargers at Dollar Tree.  I think they help to show off the gold trim on Great Grandma's dishes.   

I don't have any gold flatware, so I use my every day mismatch silverware (many are from my Great Grandma's daughter - my Grandma - my Dad's mom).  

That little glass plate you see above the butter knife is...

a butter pat.  These are from my mom.  Back in the good 'ole days, people used butter pats for just that - a pat of butter at each place setting.  Last year we used these, and they were a great conversation piece.

For the center piece, I used one of the serving bowls from Great Grandma's set of dishes (see the gold rim peeking out).  I filled it with greenery and red bulbs.  I scattered a few white tipped pine cones around the center piece.

Seeing Red (in the eating nook)

The table is all decked out for Christmas!

I picked some branches from a tree in the woods (smells so good, but man does it make my hands itch).  I tucked the branches in my vintage blue mason jar.  

There are tiny pine cones on the branches - they are sooooo adorable.  The smallest things excite me sometimes!  

I tied twine around the jar and strung a small red bulb on for a festive look.  

The table cloth, which I have had for years, has sparkly gold in it.  I purchased the gold charger plate at  Dollar Tree.  On the charger are white tipped pine cones and small red ornaments.  

The candle holders were my Grandmother's.  Cream colored votive candles adorned with frosted berry rings finish the look on the table.

For the light fixture above the table, I put some faux greenery with a little bling hanging.  Snowflakes and icicles.  

On the wall it is all tied together with my red Merry Christmas tin.

Harvest Tablescape With Meaningful Items

I love to fill my home with items that have a bit of personal history.  

This tablescape is a harvest...items gathered (harvested) throughout the years from many different sources.

The dinner plates and bowls are my every day dishes.  I first bought a service for 4 at a yard sale, then purchased more through e-bay to complete the set.  They are Johann Haviland Blue Garland from Germany. (They deserve a post of their own.)

The salad plates are from a set of dishes that my Mom gave me.  I love the different shades of blue on them.

The tea cups are from the original yard sale purchase.  I love the detail on these.  But to be honest, I like a larger mug to drink my coffee and tea from (wink).

The drinking glasses are from my parents, who got them from a family friend.  They are very delicate (we learned the hard way that they break easily).  Look at the intricate details.  I love the feel of these glasses...such depth.

Filling my home with meaningful things also means that we use them.  I am not a fancy person, saving these for special occasions only, nor do I fill these glasses with fancy drinks.  We drink out of them regularly 'just because'.

The utensils are a mix match...some I purchased, some were gifts, but most I inherited from my grandmother when she passed away.

This orange leaf candy dish is from my Mom.  She used it when I was a little girl.  So we'll call it vintage, not antique (smile).  Do you remember when orange was a popular decorating color?

The pitcher is from a family friend.  It has beautiful colors of autumn that dance perfectly with the blue, that then ties it all together with the blue dishes and place mats.  I used faux foliage in the pitcher.  It gives height to the tablescape.

The orange pumpkin, along with the yellow and green gourds are ceramic.  The small white pumpkins/gourds are from a friend's garden.

Last, but certainly not least, I must show you my two helpers (Ginger and Lily).  I am so used to them being with me and 'helping' me that I did not realize they were in some of the pictures until I uploaded them from my camera.
